In the last days people began to write thier epitaphs in the messages to all base. Some were simple "good bye"s, others were extended thank-yous and quotes. Some were moved to tears, others marked the passing in their own ways. Its hard to explain the atmosphere - because this was more than a BBS, it was a community. Many door-game and files orientated boards go bust all the time, yet their passing is not missed as much as one where people truly connect as is the case here.
I certainly felt strong pangs of sadness during the final hours. I logged on and talked with Lord British (Carl Nordstrand) until five minutes to midnight. I was then paged by Sleeping Beauty (Caroline Ryu) and we talked for a couple of minutes, she reminding me of a gathering the following Friday. She had already been paged by Portunus, and had said her goodbyes. By that time Node 1 was empty and disconnected. I ended chat with her, and she chatted with Carl while Portunus paged me.
We talked for about half an hour while Carl and Caroline said their goodbyes and node two and node three were sequentially disconnected. This followed:
ok.. back in a mo..sorry.. we are all on our lonesome now... oh well.. I think this is it .. you're the last ever caller of PLCBCS ... :-)... guess I'll be catching up with you on ICQ.. it seems like such a low key end, the humble goodbye from me.. :-)
yes... well, once again, its been great, thanks heaps for a year and a bit of good fun. I'll be seeing ya around :)
