Being a message-based BBS, PLCBCS had a number of message bases (or message areas) where people could talk about different subjects. I suppose you might consider this similar to different newsgroups, except there were only a few message bases, and the message throughput would probably not be anywhere near as large as most newsgroups. Here's a summary of the message bases that existed: General Messages (Area #1) This was the area for general conversation, as the title suggested, and the area through which most people communicated. All responses to messages posted to everyone were dumped into this area too. As a result, it was the largest message area on the board, at any one time holding thousands of messages from people around Auckland. Private Messages (Area #2) For discussing private matters, exchanging personal details etc, this was the place to use. This was often the second most highly used base on the board as some people chose to communicate through it exclusively due to its private nature. Messages to the sysops were also posted here. Kinky Korner (Area #4) A place to be kinky, although from what I've seen it never got much kinkier than "HAVE SEX WIF ME"... ^_- One of the least popular message bases on the board, yet still used enough to warrant maintenance. PLCBCS Last Words (Area #5) This was the most recent area, an area for people to post their last words, thanks and so on relating to the closure of PLCBCS. The contents of this base have been posted online. La Café (Area #7) Another general forum.. I am not sure what it was originally intended to do, but was generally more civilised than General Messages (^_^) and served as a place for replies to homepages. The Homepages (Area #8) This was where people would post messages with information about themselves. Homepages could be simple or elaborate with flashy extended ascii (oooh), and some users had it down to an art form ^_^ Messages to All (Area #10) Messages posted in this area would be mailed to all users when they logged on, sorta like "mass mailing". It was intended for people to share their thoughts or make announcements, however people found other, less savoury uses for it as well and a "! - ignore messages to all" command was installed by Portunus for people not wanting to deal with the evangelism ^_^ The Moon Room (Area #11) Set up sometime in April 1997, this was my message base, originally intended to be for conversation about Sailor Moon. (for more details see "The Moon Room Shrine" It eventually became a general forum used mainly by three or four users. Its claim to fame is that the message count was often the second or third highest on the base - from four users! Messages from Portunus & Primal (Area #15) This was set up so that the sysop and cosysop could send messages that everyone could read even if they had turned off messages to all. Important announcements were also placed here upon request. Click [Here] to continue. |
